Balls and Ramps
The first graders were hard at work trying to figure out what incline would be best suited to make their Hot Wheels car knock down castles and fly over bridges!!!

As the first few months of school are coming to an end, I wanted to let families know what their students have been learning in Science.
Kindergarten has been working hard on learning about their bodies and what makes us the same and different from our friends. They have also talked a LOT about our 5 senses and how we use them. They will be moving into learning about Weather in the next few weeks.
First grade is learning about how balls and ramps work and what type of ramp is best for a given job. We will begin learning about solids and liquids in the next few weeks. This always proves to be a fun but messy unit, but kids are so excited that many like to try these investigations at home to share with their families!!!
Second grade is working on finishing up our "Changes of State" unit and "Balancing and Weighing". We will be moving into sound soon. Sound is always a favorite. Hopefully they will want to come home and teach you everything they have learned!
Third grade is taking in all the amazing information about habitats, adaptations, and animal classifications as well as learning about Plant Growth. They are hard at work!!! Soon, they will be moving on to Circuits and Pathways, and the Solar System (my personal favorite). Families may have some night time viewing for this one which is always an enjoyable experience as your little one discovers the night sky.
Grade four is working very hard on learning how a solid, liquid, and gas change from one form to another. In addition they have been learning a lot about Weather. In the next few weeks they will be moving on to learning about Rocks and Minerals as well as how the Earth changes. They always have a great time with these units because they get to discover things they may never have seen before.
Our fifth grade "upper classmen" have been doing a great job learning about how our bones and skeletons work and how simple and complex machines aid in the work our bones do. After the holidays, these students will be hitting the grindstone to get ready for the MCAS in May. They will review everything learned from third grade on. They will need your help over the next months to aid in the preparation for this assessment. I try not to get the students nervous about this because it is just a test, but it is one that they need to take seriously to prove they have learned what they need to.

Our forth graders had a great time becoming engineers as they designed sails. They competed to see who could come up with the best design that would sail the fastest without tipping over. From this information, they will go on to design a windmill that could be used to keep water in constant motion in order to add oxygen to it.

Balls and Ramps Unit
Here are some amazing ramps created by our first graders. Their task was to build a ramp that caused a ball to move quickly enough to knock down a stack of cups. They worked so well, that I believe we have some engineers in the making here at Glickman!!!
